Sorry, Affordable Care Act. Sometimes you can’t shake the nickname you got when you were young. Well, what are you really about, under all the names?

IN A NUTSHELL
NICKNAME: Obamacare
FULL NAME: Patient Protection & Affordable Care Act

What It Does
– Creates a public health insurance plan option, in additional to the private options that currently exist
– Expands access to insure more Americans

How It Insures More Americans
– It includes the Individual Mandate which basically says everyone is required to have healthcare.
– Those in low income brackets will be eligible for free coverage or subsidies, depending on income level.
– It increases insurance coverage of most pre-existing conditions. Those with pre-existing conditions must be offered the same premium (for public & private plans), instead of a higher premium or being denied coverage.
– Supports a state-run consumer assistance programs to help understand insurance options, sign up for insurance and file complaints and appeals easier

Key Features
Key features noted on the government’s healthcare website:
– Benefits for Women: Providing insurance options, covering preventive services, and lowering costs
– Young Adult Coverage: Coverage available to children up to age 26
– Strengthening Medicare: Yearly wellness visit and many free preventive services for some seniors with Medicare
– Holding Insurance Companies Accountable: Insurers must justify any premium increase of 10% or more before the rate takes effect

There has obviously been controversy over this Act since it’s a big change.  Major problems with the government’s healthcare website caused a lot of bad press for them in 2013. Aside from that, people question the value of the public option.
